If your only going to get two bites they may as well be two big ones. That is some big fish, I bet some guys would like to have those this weekend down there at the Big Bass Bash.  Are you from the LOZ area? I am on the other side of Truman lake in Clinton, MO.

I got out this weekend with my daughter. We fished a crappie tournament on Truman lake. She just turned 16 and has now shown an interest in fishing some tournaments with me. I don't think at 16 that she will be wanting to fish with dad for much longer. We spider rigged minnows all day and caught over a 100 crappie. She was cold with the strong north wind in the first creek I planned to fish over stake beds in. So we ran to a different creek to get out of the wind and started catching them shallow. We did not catch enough big fish to cash a check but she sure had a good time on her first trip spider rigging. She also had fun taking the fish to the scales with all the "Big Boys". Hard to beat time on the water with your kids.

Got to pick up my crappie I caught while pre-fishing at Grenada lake for Crappie Master's national championship. I think it turned out real good.

I caught it on a 3" White/Chart. Charlie Brewer slider tipped with a 3"-3 1/4" minnow. Slow trolling in about 8 ft of water.

Here is a new style tournament that will be held on Truman Lake this summer. Should be a fun way with a little strategy involved. Here is a pic of the flyer for it. If you need more info you can reach Ryan at rgerman@premiergm.org.

Boats / New crappie rig
« on: February 20, 2014, 09:24:13 pm »
Here is some pics of the boat I bought at the end of the 2013 tournament season. It's a 2008 Ranger 198 VX with a 200 Optimax. It was a one owner with only 56 hours on it. I just upgraded the Lowrance 5" graphs to 1159 and 1199 Humminbird graphs. Just need to install the track for the Tite-Lok Widow Maker's and I am ready for 2014 tournament season.

Love having you all down here from Wisconsin Randy. I sure am lucky to have lived so close to such a great fishery all my life. It has produced some great fish and better memories and friends along the way. Glad to be able to have met you and Bruce through "fishing" and become friends. Fishing has brought a lot of great people into my life.

Spawning / Re: spawn
« on: February 19, 2014, 09:08:05 pm »
I think there is more involved than just the water temps. A local biologist says that the length of the day light hours is a big factor. Then you have rising and falling water levels and some say the moon phase also plays into it. The length of day plays into the way deer and turkey know when its time to start breeding "Rutting". Usually later in April here on Truman for the real good spawn fishing to get started. Have seen the best week of catching them on the banks in the 2nd week of May.

General Discussion / Truman ice
« on: February 19, 2014, 08:53:13 pm »
Looks like we are finally starting to see some open water on Truman lake. Still can't get to it from any ramps but should open up quickly with all the wind we are getting and the rain they are calling for tonight. They have run some water through the dam this week and it has opened up the river for a pretty good ways. Should be some crappie being caught there this week. The walleye will also start making there run up to the dam as the water temps start to creep up. The upper end of Truman had people ice fishing on it with 9" of ice over this past weekend. So really looking forward to the ice being gone so we can get the boats out and start spider rigging.

I don't think there is a better lake in MO than Truman for big fish. There could be some small lakes that can produce some big slabs also. But for the bigger lakes Truman is a great one.
